This photograph was taken of Marcelina at her father's funeral. Her father, in the grave behind her, was put in the ground just five minutes before this photograph was taken. He passed away from alcohol poisoning after he drank a bottle of alcohol from the pharmacy. Though many people were crying sporadically throughout the funeral there was also an air of joy. In the Mayan cultures of Guatemala, death is usually not viewed as the end but rather the beginning. A funeral is not just a time to mourn, it is a celebration of someone's life. Consequently, funerals tend to be grand celebrations with music, drinking and socializing, not just grieving. This probably accounts for the smile on Marcelinita's face. Though she will miss her father she is now celebrating his life and she realizes this point marks his beginning.
